Hi there,
So I have a 98 ford ranger, automatic, 2wd with the 4.0l engine. I am certain I have a crankshaft sensor/synchro failure. Car will turn but won't start. I replace the fuel pump recently and tried injecting some starting fluid in the intake to get it started, nothing. I am not having sparks I just figured. That's why I think it is the cps. My questions are:
1. Do I need to pull and replace the whole unit or can I just replace the
sensor part? Local auto parts dealer seem to have conflicting views?
2. If I can replace just the sensor, do I need the ford special tool? And would you know the size of the two bolts that hold the sensor in place? They are very hard to reach..
Thanks a lot,
Cheers! M

The cam sensor won't keep it from starting - the crank sensor will, however. Do you have 12 volts available at the coil pack on the red wire at key on? If not, let me know.
Make sure the crank position sensor wiring isn't chafing against ground anywhere. The crank sensor is the most likely cause of your failure.

Hi there,
I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and that fixed it. Without your advice i would have replaced the camshaft sensor first ( much bigger hassle). So a BIG BIG THANK YOU!!!
Many cheers!!
