I have a 99 jeep cherokee 4.0 I6. the check engine light has been coming on for the last two weeks. it tries to die occasionally when idling and misfires while driving(bucks and kicks also loses power) Diagnosic showed two codes: p0340 No cam signal at pcm/ p0351 ignition coil #1 primary circuit. I have replaced both the crankshaft sensor and the ignition coil but have had no success. Also checked asd relay and it seems to be fine.

It'll take care of your problem.

Great article. all the same issues i am having with my jeep. only one problem, the 99 and earlier models have no camshaft sensor on top of the oil pump drive. so why would it put out a faulty camshaft signal code if there is nothing there to sense it.

It's still an adjustment you can make.
check the attachment
With the engine on TDC compression number 1 cylinder, you must cut the ears off of the distributor hold down tab and adjust the distributor body so that the alignment pin will pass through the distributor body and the hole in the cam sensor vane cup.

I sure will. Also, I saw in my Haynes Repair book where on the 99 or earlier models the cam sensor is found within the distributor and is known as a stator. Would replacing this help?

No.
What you need to do is make sure it's adjusted right. Replacing it won't do anything.

I have removed the old camshaft sensor. It seems to be in good condition. I have also aligned the pulse ring alignment hole with the alignment hole on the base of the distributor housing. But in order to do this i had to rotate the crankshaft outside of TDC. It seems like the pulse ring is fixed to the shaft, so how do i align the pulse ring with its appropriate mating alignment hole while keeping the crankshaft at TDC?

The distributor housing needs to be rotated (you may have to modify the distributor hold down to make this happen) so that the pulse ring is line up with the distributor housing (engine on TDC compression, cylinder number 1).

I aligned the pulse ring with the hole in the distributor housing and replaced the camshaft sensor just for the heck of it. Its run fine for two days now and im keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks so much for all of the help. The advice was absolutely necessary.
