I have a 95 t-bird w/4.6l it started stuttering lost all power and died. The fuel pump was not putting out enough pressure so I replaced it. Still won’t run. I checked the spark it was sparking but I checked the coils and one was not reading anything the other reads 12.2 ohms resistance so I went to the junk yard and got another one that reads 12.2 then read my book and they are supposed to be between 13-14 ohms they are sparking though. ok now i ordered a cam sensor and put that (because the code popped up for it once before all this) in now my car still will not start. All the plugs are wet and it smells like gas very strong when I crank on it. I put new plugs and wires in. also replaced the crank sensor. The firing order is correct. I think it is a spark problem because I tried starting fluid and it didn’t change anything Dan
Okay, Dan, we know a couple of things already.
First, we know you're getting fuel (I assume you checked the pressure with a gauge - simply pressing the little Schrader pin isn't a reliable test). We also know you have fuel injection (the injectors clicking) both these first two pieces of data because your spark plugs are wet.
Next, we know you have spark (it should be good and strong, able to jump about an inch) and we know you have good spark plugs because you replaced them (unless the new spark plugs are bad, which almost NEVER happens.
The fact that is has all these elements and won't fire leads us to go deeper and look other places besides spark, fuel, and electronics.
Now, my next question is, did it start skipping and quit all on the same day or had you noticed a loss of power for a while (a few days/weeks) before it finally died? If the exhaust is totally clogged it can keep it from starting, thus the question about how long you had been experiencing symptoms.
If I was in your shoes, I'd be checking the compression to see if there was some kind of timing chain issue - low compression on one or more cylinders (how does it sound when you spin it?) would point in this direction.
You've eliminated a lot of stuff.
Richard
First I would just like to thank you for helping me solve this problem. With your advice I did a compression test. (I didn’t think was needed due to recent engine rebuild) Regretfully the engine has failed the test.
1=120psi, 2=115psi, 3=115psi, 4=120psi, 5=130psi, 6=75psi, 7=150psi, 8=145psi
The compression is all over the place, but that won’t cause a no-start. It turned out that the catalytic converters are the problem. I unbolted the pipes and it fired up thank you very much for your help. Dan
