I have a 98 Nissan frontier 5 speed 2.4L 4WD truck. When I'm either in gear or in not my engine will sputter when the gas pedal is lightly pressed. Once driving up to speed with the gas pedal at least half way down things seem fine. I have replaced the wires, plugs and distributor cap. I have a k&n air filter that was cleaned about a year ago and my fuel filter was changed less than three years ago. The problem started with a check engine light and code saying cylinder #4 misfire. Then that’s when I changed wires, plugs, etc. and I'm still having the sputter.

There are 4 little ports that feed Exhaust gas to the cylinders on those
trucks, if I remember correctly. One of my students had that problem on his mother's truck and all the ports except one was clogged. I imagine port number 4 is the only one that's getting EGR, thus the misfire.
Disconnect the vacuum hose going to the EGR valve and drive the truck that way. If the sputter goes away, then the EGR ports need to be cleaned. If not, then we need to move in a different direction.
Let me know what you find.

Wow! Not only does it not sputter any more but it seem like it picked up about 10 horsepower or so. I'm kinda strapped for cash at the moment. How long do I have until I can pay somebody to clean those ports out?
