I just had an oil
change and was told that I should have an engine flush. I have a 2000 Neon with
145000. Would you recommend this? Anything else you would recommend that can
keep the car running good for awhile longer?

Well, not every engine needs an
engine flush...
If you have driven it short
distances a lot or allowed the engine to run too cold (like with a bad
thermostat), you might have some sludge in there, but unless they pull the oil
pan and valve cover, they won't get most of the sludge anyway. From my
perspective, an engine flush is a waste of money.
Have you driven short distances a
lot, or on a regular basis? Does the engine temp (if you have a gauge)
run up around the middle of the gauge? If so, the engine is probably clean,
but I'd make sure I had an operational PCV system. Regular oil changes
(3000-5000 miles), a warm running engine, and a well-serviced PCV system will
go a long way toward keeping the sludge under control.
A cooling system flush might be in
order, particularly if it hasn't been done every 30,000 - replace the radiator
cap each time. And don't forget the timing belt - it was supposed to be
changed at 105,000 miles. The spark plugs should have been replaced at
90,000 miles. The drive belt for the alternator, A/C, and PS pump should
be replaced periodically. Keep the battery terminals clean, etc.
Something else that is a waste of
money is a power steering flush, but a lot of oil change outlets offer
it. The interesting thing is that you really don't know whether they did
it right or not.
I try to stay away (mostly) from the
things that aren't in the maintenance guide that the manufacturer published to
go with the car. The folks that built it are the best source of
information.
