Hello, I
have a 2000 VW Jetta GLS with the 2.0 Liter Engine. For some reason, the
idle is really low and oddly enough the cruise control does not work. I
say that because, I had this issue before and has a loose battery connection. When I tightened the battery
cables, it went away. I had to change the front headlight, and when I
reconnected the battery, I now have the same problem again, except this time, I can’t
seem to fix it. It’s a really strange problem. It drives me nuts
because it stalls several times when the engine is cold. Any suggestions? Thank
you,
Todd
Okay, Todd,
That cruise control problem is a peculiar one and may
or may not be related to the idle (not 'idle') speed. Let's
tackle the idle speed first. Try getting some Berryman carb spray and
cleaning your throttle body with a toothbrush. Sludge and gummy stuff that
gathers around the throttle plate can choke the airflow and after you
disconnect the battery the PCM will generally forget what it learned as the
throttle body slowly built up the deposits. Typically it'll take awhile
for the PCM to relearn those values, and we'd like to start over like it was
a new car. Remove the battery terminal again, clean
the throttle body, and then reconnect the battery cable. Start the
engine. After the carb spray has been cleared
from the intake (you may have to rev it slightly to clear the puddled
cleaner), it should idle, and it should learn the idle parameters. Let me know what that does. Richard

Cleaning
out the throttle body definitely improved the idle. Previously it was idling
around 600 RPM (all the time - cold or warm). After I cleaned it
out, it was Idling at about 800 RPM, and by the time I got to work 1,000 RPM -
which I THINK is normal. - Thank you!
